The Allies targeted four key bridges over the River Rhine in their surge towards Germany in September 1944. Airborne landings at Veghel, Grave and Nijmegen were succesfull - but a terrible price was paid at Arnhem, where the British 1st Airborne Division fought gallantly for survival. Only a quarter of the division made it safely back to British lines: The others being killed, wounded or captured.
